Kana is the brand name of my reinterpretation of the traditional games (Dhamma), a two-players strategic board game, simple to understand, yet extremely challenging to master.

The Product:

By analyzing the rules of the game and how the wooden piece changes its way of touching the board, I was able to juxtapose the traditional design of the piece with architecturally inspired design to produce a new geometry (cuboctahedron: six-squares and eight-triangles); this is while maintaining the original black and yellow.

The board was designed with convince in mind, it is made of a fabric layer with the playing grid, sewed with a leather layer on the bottom to protect the fabric and offer a satisfying heavier cushion-like base; the convenience comes as a product of sewing only the lower half of the parameter which makes the board a traveling bag. the grid is also redesigned to match the geometry of the wooden pieces.

The wooden pieces and the board both come in an Acrylic box, this is to make it a statement piece, presentable in an office or Diwaniya, instead of thrown in the board games drawer under the TV.

The Brand:

  • The name: in Arabic, Kana has no meaning, and it was developed by taking the word (D-A-M-A) and replacing the first letter with (K) to create a breaking sound that gives the image of edgy product as opposed to (D) that gave the image of rounded product as it is typically produced; the (N) replaced (M) so that it gives a familiar sounding word:

If you add (EST) before (Kana) it will become (Estikana) the typical teacup used in Diwaniyas.

If you add (T) it becomes (Tekana) which is a description of (a well-mannered gentleman).

If you add (Ma) it becomes (Makana) which means (high social status).

All tree meanings paint an image of the targeted costumer.

And If you removed the last (A) it becomes (Kan) which means (was), giving the sense of nostalgia.

  • Logo: the starting arrangement of the wooden pieces on the board is 2x8 units, this was the inspiration for the grid used to create the logo.
